Choosing a Direction
Here on the nelson academy webpage in 2025, we’re at the point during code review where we need to choose a direction to expand the basic idea of a member site where members can choose words they want to study.
Sign up and login is done. Member words are done, as is adding a group of words from a lesson or textbook. So we could publish a story on the blog and have a button that ensures the vocabulary from that story is in the user’s study list.
So now we need to choose what to do next. Here are some options. Let’s try to choose the best way forward to make a great website for learning English!
Looking at the DB, we could…
- Create a system of roles for Teachers, Students and so forth, creating a Classrooms database, so that the system can immediately be used to manage students in a class.
- This may include making a classroom organizer with little games like name selectors, tap to quiz/student notes/class notes etc. to manage the day to day record-keeping of a class. Like on an ipad or something. A teacher’s assistant.
- Fix the spelling bee. It’s a popular fun game and it can probably be done in a couple of days.
- Fix the picture game. Probably a week or so, looks a bit difficult that one.
- Fix the memory game. Also a bit difficult, but a fun game.
- Work on the admin section to provide online management of members, words, etc.
At the same time, looking at the old version of the site, we could:
- Create the dictionary system.
- Create the flashcard quiz system. Probably top priority.
- Multiple choice tests? other kinds of flashcard games?
- create automated reports/report cards/statistics for students, teachers and parents.
- Create a story/reader system for graded reading.
- Create some other game
- Integrate AI to recommend new words from stories/etc based on level
- Implement grammar teaching (i.e. scaffolding practice)
After a short chat about what we might need to do next or what was most important, Neo chose to work on….
The Spelling bee!
The spelling bee is a great way to give students a fun way to learn English by competing against themselves and others for the best English score!
